New Mexico
We hunt unit 46 which is all private land with some of the
ranches bordering National Forest. Unit 46 is made up mostly of Mora County
which is North Central New Mexico. All
elk tags in Unit 46 are landowner
sponsored. Resident and non-resident alike must purchase one of these
landowner tags to hunt Unit 46. These hunts are conducted between 7,000 and
10,000 feet with good access. Horses are not needed. The terrain is mild
compared to most elk hunts. Hunting is done out of blinds, this limits the
pressure on Elk. We let the elk come to us, we will stalk if necessary. Mode
of transportation is 4x4 ATV. Trophy bulls up to 370 have been spotted on
these ranches with an average being a mature 5x5 or 6x6 in the 275-300
range. This is an either sex hunt with cow
only hunts available. Archery
season runs from Sept. 1-24. This is one of the best times to take a very
large bull in rut. Shot opportunity is very high for archers. Archery hunts
are six (6) days of hunting to maximize opportunity. Rifle season opens the
weekend after archery ends. The elk are still very active and in the rut and
you can hunt with a rifle. We have great success on these early season
hunts! But wait, it’s not over yet. Rifle season runs from October 1 to
December 31. This makes late season December hunts a real opportunity. The
more winter weather the more elk coming from the high
country. Land owner
tags are included in the cost by the Outfitter. No draw necessary. The
hunting area is reached by flying into Albuquerque renting a SUV and driving
to the hunting quarters near Mora. You may choose to drive right to Ranch
Headquarters in your own vehicle. Hunters will stay in a four bedroom home
with a hot shower and beds. Meals will be served two times a day and sack
lunch will be provided each day. Bear can also be taken with an additional
license at no charge. Space is limited, make reservations early, a year in
advance is not too soon. We have several late season Cow Elk only tags. This
is physically a very easy hunt, especially good for someone wanting meat for
the freezer, anyone young, old or family’s who enjoy the hunt not the horns.
Great hunt for kids to get there first Elk. Opportunities are high.
